Samsung’s mobile processor for the Galaxy S8 may have just leaked – is this the real deal?
A new report by WCCFTech has made a number of claims about an upcoming Samsung Exynos processor, based on several leaks on China’s social media site Weibo (read: super sketchy). According to the article, Samsung is working on a chip called ‘Exynos 8895’, which it says will power next year’s Galaxy S8.
The report goes on to claim that the Exynos 8895 will be built on a 10nm manufacturing process, which would make it Samsung’s most powerful and efficient chip ever. It also claims that it will be clocked at 3GHz, but unfortunately that doesn’t tell us very much about real-world performance. However, power consumption will allegedly drop to 5W, which should bring battery life improvements.
The final claim is that the Exynos 8895 will improve image processing heft by 60-70% – Apple made similar upgrades with the A10 Fusion chip in its new iPhone 7. The problem here is that we have no way of verifying any of this information, as it comes from a notoriously sketchy source: Weibo. As such, take all of the details in this report with due caution – consider it, but don’t take it as gospel.

However, despite the sketchy origins of this rumour, we have heard about the Exynos 8895 before. Back in July, a chip by that same name turned up on Zauba, an Indian import/export web tracker.
The most likely scenario is that the Exynos 8895 is just a boosted version of the Galaxy S7’s Exynos 8890. The 8890 is Samsung’s top-end chip right now, featuring a 14nm processor that’s based on ARMv8-A architecture. It runs on the Exynos M1 ‘Mongoose’ CPU and a Mali-T880 MP12 GPU. The Exynos 8895 could be Samsung’s answer to the Snapdragon 821, Qualcomm’s 10% faster upgrade to its flagship Snapdragon 820.
If the Exynos 8895 is just a minor upgrade then we’d be surprised to see it appearing in the Galaxy S8. However, with recent rumours of the Galaxy S8 release being brought forward, there’s a chance the chip may feature.
