Samsung Galaxy S6 launch hurt iPhone 6 sales, analysts claim

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 & S6 Edge have taken a bite out of iPhone 6 sales according to new market research.

A report from ATLAS Research & Consulting claims Samsung’s new flagships negatively affected Apple handset sales.

It says that the sales of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in the second week of April totalled 35,000 units.

This impressive figure is reportedly down from the previous week by 1,700 units. It has been claimed the slump is due to increased Samsung smartphone sales.

The report suggests that the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge sales numbered 79,586 units in the first six days after the April 10 launch.

This figure only includes offline sales, and online sales would contribute a significant number of devices to the total.

It’s good news for Samsung, as the new flagships’ sales are four times that of the week one Galaxy S5 figures – the 2014 handset managed just 20,000 units in the same period.

Despite the seeming implications of the figures, we can’t say for sure whether Samsung smartphone sales directly impacted iPhone 6 retail.

The sales of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus handsets have been steadily declining since the end of March. That’s not too surprising however, as both devices launched back in September.

Jang Joong-hyeok, vice chairman of ATLAS Research, said: “It is very natural for iPhone 6 sales to decline, as six months have passed since its release.”
