The Samsung Galaxy S4 may feature ‘floating touch’ technology that allows users to control aspects of the device without physically touching it, according to new reports on Friday.
The often-very-reliable SamMobile side claims to have word from a company source, who says that the Air Touch feature and a brand new, more-efficient PHOLED display will be headline-making features on the next-gen smartphone.
According to the source, the Air Touch feature would allow users to hover over the display to easily preview certain features like the contents of photo albums, or video clips, without laying their mucky paws on the screen itself.
A physical press would then follow to confirm the selection. Pretty neat huh?
A version of the Air Touch technology is integrated into the S-Pen stylus for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 phablet. However, it would be a huge surprise if Samsung added a stylus to the Galaxy S range, so we can only assume that this is finger-based with the screen itself sensing the presence of a cheeky finger.
SamMobile also points out that ‘floating touch’ tech had previously appeared on the Sony Xperia Sola smartphone.
The second interesting tidbit from the story predicts the integration of display technology that is 25 per cent more efficient than the AMOLED display on the Galaxy S3.
The site claims the S4 will employ a PHOLED screen which uses phosphorescent light rather than the fluorescent light we’ve seen in OLED displays to date.
Because this technology covers the green-yellow end of the colour spectrum it demands less power.
With a 5-inch, full HD display and the Exynos 5 octo-core processor rumoured for the Galaxy S4 a more efficient screen will certainly ease the every-growing demands on smartphone batteries.
Rumours continue to flood the consciousness of the tech world, but thankfully there’s only six more days to go before the speculation ends and we find out for real what Samsung has in store with the Galaxy S4.
