Samsung Galaxy S4 features will be brought to Samsung Galaxy S3

The new features of the Samsung Galaxy 4 look set to appear on the Samsung Galaxy S3 and other top Samsung handsets, according to Samsung.

Nick DiCarlo, Samsung’s Vice President of Portfolio Planning said that the core new UI features of the Samsung Galaxy S4 should be coming to the Samsung Galaxy S3.

“Anything that we can do that’s not dependent on hardware like InfraRed, we’ll definitely bring to all the flagship devices,” said DiCarlo.

This could include the new camera functionalities like Dual Shot or Eraser Shot and the Smart Pause feature that DiCarlo says made Samsung opt to improve the camera features rather than opt for UltraPixel technology seen in the HTC One.

“The key thing you’ve got to think about in this debate is, how easy is a camera to use and what cool things can you do with it?” he said.  “Photo quality is great, and has been great; for the average day-to-day person you’re not having a quality argument about photography. For your everyday use case, the ability to remove photobombers and that kind of stuff is really what’s going to have people talking.”

DiCarlo was also proud of the fact that the Samsung Galaxy S4 is actually physically slightly smaller than the Samsung Galaxy S3, despite packing a larger 5-inch screen and upgraded innards.

“I think that the Galaxy S3 was considered a big screen device and we made it smaller this year. That’s an amazing feat and I think it’s something that Samsung is able to do that really helps us stand out,” he said.

Running the latest Google OS, Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, the Samsung Galaxy S4 overlays Samsung’s own TouchWiz UI to make it stand out from other Android competitors, such as the Sony Xperia Z.

“I think that the brilliance of the Android strategy from the beginning was that you have this baseline that was real standard, and we’ve been huge advocates and defenders of that, but that allow you to do creative things on the top of that,” added DiCarlo.

“I give Andy Rubin and those guys a lot of credit for having that insight. The model works great, right? You can have all these cool services from Google while also having companies like Samsung also build all of these things on top of it without breaking it.”

The Samsung Galaxy S4 UK release date has been set for April 26, with handset only prices as well as tariff options yet to be revealed by Samsung or UK network providers.
