Samsung Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean update released – OTA roll-out begins

The Jelly Bean update for the Samsung Galaxy S3 has arrived. It is already being flung over the airwaves in Poland, with other European territories expected to get in on the action soon.

The first version of the Samsung Galaxy S3 to get the Jelly Bean update is the international, unlocked version of the phone. According to SamMobile, the OTA deployment has begun in Poland. Although there’s no official word on when other parts of Europe will get the update, we’ll keep you informed of any news on a UK release.

Want to know more? The Samsung Galaxy S3 Jelly Bean update should be available both as an over-the-air download, and as an update that can be applied through Kies, Samsung’s desktop sync software. It’s a 774MB file according to the folk over at XDA-Developers forum, so think again if you were planning on leeching the thing on a 3G connection.

Features that Android Jelly Bean will bring to the Samsung Galaxy S3 include a speed increase dubbed Project Butter and improved power management. Project Butter makes cleverer use of a device’s CPU to keep Android locked at a silky-smooth 60fps, which should be no problem with the S3’s quad-core 1.4GHz processor in tow. Many of the software’s other features are available through the phone’s TouchWiz UI, though, thanks to Samsung’s own customisations.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the best-selling flagship phone of the year to date, having already sold more than 20 million units. However, the iPhone 5 is already hot on its heels. It reached a million pre-orders within 24 hours, and analyst reports suggest that the phone sold in three days what the iPhone 4S sold in a month, in the US.

Samsung’s JK Skin says that sales of the phone will surpass 30 million by the end of the year, while the iPhone 5 is expected to sell around 27 million in the final months of the year alone, according to Shaw Wu of firm Stern, Agee & Leach. It’s a race to the finish line, but which phone is going to come out in front? Drop us your bookie’s prediction in the comments.
