Samsung Galaxy Round curved screen smartphone officially announced

Samsung has finally ended all of the speculation of recent months by taking the wraps off the Samsung Galaxy Round, a new smartphone with a large curved display.

The Samsung Galaxy Round looks rather like the recently released Samsung Galaxy Note 3 but for the fact that its 5.7-inch 1080p OLED display is concave, curving up at the left and right sides as you hold it in portrait view.

The rest of the device follows suit, leaving a rounded leather-like back and a device that rocks when you lay it down on a flat surface. Indeed, this facilitates one of the main new features of the Samsung Galaxy Round.

By tilting the device towards you, in landscape, you can peek at basic information like the date and time and any missed calls without fully waking the device. Samsung‘s calling this feature ‘Round Interaction,’ for obvious reasons.

This being a high-end Samsung smartphone, the Galaxy Round is more than just an unorthodox display. It’s pretty thin at 7.9mm, though of course that curve will take up a little extra practical space in your pocket. At 154 grams, though, it actually weighs a fair bit less than the Galaxy Note 3.

The Galaxy Round runs on Android 4.3, and is driven by a 2.3GHz quad-core processor and a meaty 3GB of RAM. It’s also go a 13-megapixel camera around back, and is powered by a 2,800mAh battery.

There’s no news on a western release as yet, but the Samsung Galaxy Round is hitting its native South Korea in “Luxury Brown” tomorrow for 1.09 million won (which is about £632).
