Samsung Galaxy phone with wraparound display reportedly in the works

Samsung is apparently working on a new Galaxy smartphone with a unique wraparound display, according to a fresh report.

The Korean manufacturer has been experimenting with new screen shapes of late with the Samsung Galaxy Round (pictured), an Android-powered phone with an unusual curved design.

However, Samsung’s next step could be even more unorthodox. According to Bloomberg, which cites not one but “two people familiar with the plans,” Samsung is working on a phone with a wraparound display for release next year.

The idea is that users will be able to read notifications, messages and the like from multiple angles, not just when staring straight at their phone’s screen. If you’re a little confused as to the form this might take, as we were, then you should note that the report also refers to the device as having a “three-sided display.”

Each side of this display will be able to operate independently, so you could potentially have different notifications and even applications running on different sides.

Apparently, the device will utilise an updated version of the Youm technology that makes the aforementioned Samsung Galaxy Round capable of doing its curved-screen tricks.

With the Round, you’re able to tilt the device towards you, revealing basic information like the date and time and any missed calls without fully waking the device.

It’s evident that manufacturers are looking to the next innovation in smart devices, with curved displays joining wearable tech as the most likely source of the next big thing.
