Samsung has significantly upgraded the Power Saving mode for the new Galaxy Note 7, including adding a new display resolution reduction feature.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 7, launched at yesterday’s Galaxy Unpacked event, comes with a swanky new Power Saving mode that can extend your phone’s battery life by an additional 35 hours, based on a full charge.
However, that impressive boost is only possible by forcing the phone to reduce its capabilities significantly. To that end, there are three Power Saving mode settings you can choose from:
Power Saving mode – Off
This one is pretty self-explanatory: nothing changes. Your phone’s processor operates at full throttle, the screen is hi-res, bright, and gloriously sharp, and the battery will drain at a normal rate.
The Galaxy Note 7 features a 3,500mAh battery, which is significantly larger than the 3,000mAh cell featured on the previous Note. Unfortunately, it isn’t clear exactly how long the phone’s battery life is as standard just yet.
Power Saving mode – Mid
When you switch to “Mid”, your phone makes a number of performance changes. The CPU is throttled, which means that intensive tasks won’t work as well, although low-performance tasks should still be fine.
The Note 7 also drops its display resolution from Quad HD to Full HD (1080p). This shouldn’t be hugely noticeable on a smartphone screen, but it will save heaps of battery life – QHD displays are notoriously power-hungry.
Power Saving mode – Max
The final, ultimate setting is “Max”, and sees the display resolution scaled down even further to HD (720p). You’ll also find that network usage is shut off, and navigation animations are disabled. And, of course, the CPU is throttled even further so that only essential processing power is doled out to your system.
Unfortunately, we can’t tell you exactly how any of these settings will perform until we complete our full review of the Galaxy Note 7, which you can expect in the coming weeks.
