Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus reportedly set for August 13 reveal

Samsung will announce its new high-end phablet range, the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, on August 13.

That’s the claim coming from Samsung’s home country of South Korea, at least.

Business Korea has confirmed reports that Samsung wants to bring forward the launch of its next Galaxy Note and the super-sized S6 Edge spinoff. This is apparently intended to preempt the launch of the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, the latter of which will be a direct rival to both new Samsung phones.

“Industry sources” claim that Samsung will hold an event in New York on August 13 to announce the new phones. As the report points out, this is a departure from Samsung’s usual practice.

In previous years, a new Note has been announced at the IFA trade show in Germany. It’s typically the headline device for the show, generating and feeding off plenty of the surrounding buzz.

Bringing the release forward means that Samsung won’t get quite the same level of surrounding attention, and will have to produce a stand-alone event of its own.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will apparently feature a 5.7-inch QHD Super Amoled display, a new Exynos 7422 CPU backed by a generous 4GB of RAM, and a 16 megapixel camera. Naturally, it will also feature the S Pen stylus that gives the Note its name.

Meanwhile the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus is expected to essentially be a larger version of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. As such, it will omit the Note’s stylus and stick with the same Exynos 7420 CPU and 3GB of RAM combo as the S6 range.

Like the S6 Edge, its defining feature will be a dual-curved-edge display, only this time it will be expanded to 5.7-inches.
