Samsung is planning a more affordable version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and it could be called the Neo, according to recent internet leaks.
The original Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has gained rave reviews for its impressive specs and enormous (in every way) productivity potential. But it’s not exactly cheap, retailing as it does for more than £400 SIM-free.
There have been rumours of a more affordable version of Samsung’s S Pen-equipped phablet for some time, and now GSMArena has added a little more to the story.
Supposedly leaked internal product positioning documents suggest that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo will actually be closer to a spruced up Samsung Galaxy Note 2 than a toned down Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
This can be seen from mentions of the Neo’s specs. Apparently, it will feature a 5.55-inch 720p Super AMOLED display, an 8-megapixel camera, and a 3,100mAh battery – all components that will sound familiar to Galaxy Note 2 owners.
However, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo will sport something new on the processor front. There’s mention of an unusual 1.7GHz dual plus 1.3GHz quad-core ‘Hexa’ chip.
This new processor sounds like it sits somewhere between the 1.6GHz quad-core Exynos chip of the Galaxy Note 2 and the 1.9GHz octa-core Exynos chip of the Galaxy Note 3 (the non-4G model, at least).
The new hexa-core chip will apparently be backed by 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, which is firmly back in Galaxy Note 2 territory.
Externally, Samsung will give the Galaxy Note 3 Neo the same faux-leather back design that you can see on all recent Note devices.
Hopefully the previous rumours will prove true, and we’ll hear something official on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo at MWC 2014 towards the end of February.
