Speaking at IFA 2012, Samsung has suggested that following the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 launch it could pursue further avenues for the oversized smartphone beyond the high-end market, with future stylus packing handsets to possibly be made available to a mid-market audience.

“The Galaxy Note 2 with a 5.5-inch screen is our smarpthone offering in the Note category, the ultimate balance between portability and uncompromised media selection,” James White of Samsung Mobile UK said in a recent chat with Tech Radar.

When questioned on the future possibility of a cheaper Note handset he added: “The Note is an important category for us, and you’ll see us investing in and growing that area.”

Formally announced ahead of launch later this year, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 follows-on from its direct smartphone sibling, the original Samsung Galaxy Note, as well as its recently released tablet counterpart, the equally stylus loving Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1.

Officially unveiled following months of rumour and speculation, the second-generation Note has landed bigger (literally) and better than its hugely successful predecessor. Further blurring the boundaries between smartphones and tablets, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 features a new 5.5-inch HD Super AMOLED display, up from a 5.3-inch model, with an impressive 1280 x 720p image resolution.

Whilst the handset’s camera’s are unchanged from the original Note, the unit’s 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera with an accompanying LED flash and integrated auto-focus capabilities is further complemented by a second, 1.9-megapixel, forward-facing snapper ideal for holding video calls.

Elsewhere the device’s former dual-core CPU has come in for a refresh with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 playing host to zippy 1.6GHz quad-core processor, further enhanced by 2GB of RAM and the option of 16, 32 or 64GB worth of internal storage.

Lining up at just 9.4mm thick the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, which is to be made available in Marble White and Titanium Grey colour forms, will run the Google Nexus 7 launched Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS. Whilst pricing details have yet to be confirmed a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 UK release date has been confirmed for October.
