Samsung Galaxy K Zoom available to pre-order now for £400

Samsung’s UK website now lists the Galaxy K Zoom as being available for pre-order, and says the black and white models will ship on May 29, and the blue on June 13.

The K Zoom is Samsung latest compact camera that just happens to have a phone built in. It follows on from the Galaxy S4 Zoom of last year, but through better ergonomics aims to be a slightly more usable shape. The firm has also moved away from tying it to a specific phone equivalent, so it’s not called the S5 K Zoom.

You get an improved screen too, it’s 720×1280 now, which is well below a high-end smartphone, but an improvement over the S4 Zoom. There’s also a weight reduction from 208g to 200g, which should help people carry it around everywhere. LTE support is also better, has faster maximum download speeds and works on more frequencies.

The 16-megapixel sensor of the S4 Zoom has been replaced by a 20.7-megapixel version here, so images should have more detail although it’s possible low-light performance might be reduced as the sensor size hasn’t changed.

The OS is KitKat, which is great news, you get 50GB of Dropbox storage and the 8GB of internal storage can be boosted to 64GB via a microSD card. For our money though, the big advantage of having a camera with a phone built in is putting pictures into you cloud storage as you shoot them.

The 2430mAh battery is a mild concern, as it seems like a fairly small capacity for a phone that doubles as a camera. Perhaps that low resolution screen makes up for the difference, but we’ll let you know how it all stacks up when we get one in for review.
