Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 to be considerably cheaper than original model

Ahead of the heavily rumoured Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 release, latest reports have claimed the Korean manufacturer will offer its second-generation smartwatch at a heavily reduced price.

Despite the original Samsung Galaxy Gear having only launched back at IFA 2013 last September, a second-generation model is widely expected to be unveiled alongside the Samsung Galaxy S5 at MWC 2014 later this month.

With low Samsung Galaxy Gear sales having been largely blamed on the timepiece’s £300 price tag, it has been suggested Samsung will offer the second-generation device at a heavily discounted price.

Citing unnamed “local industry officials,” Korean news outlet ZDNet reported that “Samsung Electronics is mulling over the price range of its soon to be announced next-generation watch device as a threat of a cheaper counterpart by Apple looms this year.

Although Samsung has yet to comment on the watch’s pricing, the manufacturer has already revealed that a Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 device is in the works.

Recent reports have quoted ‘unnamed Samsung officials’ in suggesting that the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 will be “15-20 per cent thinner” than the original model and will launch alongside the S5.

Speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews last month, an official Samsung spokespeople admitted the company had made mistakes with the original Samsung Galaxy Gear.

“In terms of our addressable market, making the Gear compatible only with Samsung-branded handsets has made it a harder proposition because we have limited ourselves,” Kyle Brown, Samsung’s Head of Technical Product Management for IM admitted.

He added: “To make a really compelling companion device at the price point that it’s at we had to have these limits.”
