Samsung’s upgraded Family Hub smart fridge might be the most OTT appliance of CES

If you’re in the market for a refrigerator that can do a little more than just keep your food and beers cold, Samsung has your back with the latest version of its tech-packed Family Hub smart fridge.

The firm took the wraps off its new Family Hub refrigerator at CES 2018– and it bundles a number of exciting features, including the firm’s in-house Bixby digital assistant and a 21.5-inch LED touchscreen.

No, we aren’t kidding. You can actually instruct the fridge to complete a slew of remedial tasks, like compiling a shopping list, reading out your schedule and even playing music through the integrated AKG speakers.

What’s more, the Family Hub – as indicated by its name – was designed to act as the centrepiece of an IoT household, letting you control your home’s heating, lighting and security cameras with its massive touchscreen – provided your IoT household is powered by Samsung’s SmartThings platform, of course.

Finally, the unit sports an internal camera, so you can keep an eye on your precious King Edward spuds – or check to see what ingredients you need to stock up on for dinner – while you’re at the office. How often you’ll actually use this feature remains to be seen, though.

Samsung is set to launch the Family Hub in select markets later this year and while there’s no word on pricing, we think it’s safe to say it’ll follow in the footsteps of its predecessor, by retailing for north of £1000.
