At the Galaxy Unpacked launch on February 11, Samsung announced a new partnership with Netflix – so what does that mean for your binge-watching habit?
Samsung’s new entertainement partnership with Netflix will “put the Samsung Galaxy S20 in the hands of renowned directors to capture bonus content based on popular Netflix Originals”, so perhaps you could soon see extra videos of your favourite shows like Stranger Things or The Witcher, shot on the new flagship. On top of that, Netflix has been better integrated into the user interface of Samsung’s smartphones, so it should be easier to search for Netflix programmes and receive recommendations via Samsung Daily, Bixby, and Finder.

The tie-in is undoubtedly intended to show off the video capture capabilities of the new Samsung Galaxy S20, which the brand describes as “Pro-Grade Filming Capability”. Devices in the range can now shoot 8K footage, and stream it to an 8K QLED TV for immersive viewing. One neat new feature is that you can capture 33-megapixel still image from your 8K footage if you want to pick out a specific moment from the camera reel. However, consumers might nonetheless be surprised to see Samsung and Netflix buddying up, given that the app was pulled from some older Samsung TVs just a few months ago in November.

Not only does the video camera claim exceptional performance, but watching Netflix on an S20 smartphone screen also looks set to be a pleasure. The AMOLED displays boast Quad HD+ resolution with HDR10+ certification, with screen sizes ranging from 6.2-inches on the standard Samsung Galaxy S20, with the top-of-the-line Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra hitting a screen size of 6.9-inches. But if you’re not so keen on TV series and video games are more your style, then there’s good news for you too: Samsung also announced a partnership with Xbox that ensures that Forza Street, the firs-tever mobile game in the series, will make its debut on Samsung via the Galaxy Store app. Given the 120Hz refresh rate on the new devices, that looks likely to be a winner.
