Samsung is set to launch a 12-inch tablet in October, according to the latest rumours emanating from South Korea.
Whilst the iPad kicked off the current tablet craze with its 9.7-inch display, the current trend is for smaller tablets such as the iPad mini and Google Nexus 7. However, it seems Samsung is looking to take things in the opposite direction.
The Korea Economic Daily is claiming that Samsung is “engaged in development” of a 12.2-inch tablet, and that it will hit the market some time over the next two months.
There have been numerous rumours of a larger Samsung tablet in recent months. Back in June, it was claimed that the device would be part of the Galaxy Note series rather than the expected Galaxy Tab series, meaning it would be built with stylus control in mind.
It was suggested that the 12.2-inch display would feature a 2560 x 1600 resolution, and would employ an advanced IGZO panel from Sharp. This latest report claims that Samsung will employ its own LCD display, however.
Whilst you might think of the Note series as being comprised of hybrid ‘phablet’ devices like the 5.5-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 2, Samsung also produces the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 with – you guessed it – a 10.1-inch display. So expanding the range to incorporate an even bigger size of screen isn’t a completely outlandish idea.
Rumour has it that Apple is also planning a larger tablet, having addressed the compact tablet market with the aforementioned iPad mini and still dominating the 10-inch market.
