Sainsbury’s Entertainment launches as Roku-based Netflix rival

Sainsbury’s is getting in on the streaming race, partnering with Roku to launch a new digital entertainment channel.

Looking to rival the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video, Sainsbury’s Entertainment is now available as a free Roku app.

The on-demand service features a raft of film and TV content, with big screen hits such as 22 Jump Street and Spiderman 2 available alongside series including Friends, Breaking Bad and The Big Bang Theory.

While the Sainsbury’s Entertainment app is free to download, content is available to buy or rent on an individual basis. Full pricing details have yet to be confirmed.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “Today Sainsbury’s has launched the Sainsbury’s Entertainment channel on Roku giving you access to loads of content to keep you and your family entertained this Christmas.”

They added: “Sainsbury’s Entertainment is available for free on the Roku Channel Store exclusively in the UK and offers another great way to collect Nectar points.”

Sainsbury’s isn’t the first supermarket giant to joint the on-demand streaming race. Tesco already offers its own streaming service through Blinkbox.
