rockdirect Enters Dual Core Notebook Arena

UK company may not be the first to announce, but it could be the first to ship.

Alienware was first to announce a dual core processor for the notebook market back in November but US only company Widow claims it will ship before Christmas. Now the British have shown their hand with rockdirect making similar claims. Which will be first? They’re selling in different countries, so who cares?

Besides, Rock’s new flagship Xtreme 64 certainly catches the eye, with a rocking (pun intended) Athlon 64 X2 4800+ processor leading the line. An FX57 CPU is also an option but with games these days being specifically coded to take advantage of the X2’s multitasking capabilities, why go there…?

Being a desktop replacement machine, the Xtreme 64 continues to push the envelope. It features a large 17in screen with X-Glass as standard and super high 1920 x 1200 widescreen resolution. Dual hard drives hold up to 240GB of storage and are hot swappable for dual DVD writers if necessary. Curiously, the Xtreme 64 only ships with an nVidia GeForce Go 6800 Ultra from launch (rockdirect states temporary compatibility issues), but a 7800 GTX will be available in mid January.

Otherwise, all the bells and whistles that you would expect from such a beast line up here: 7.1 surround sound, wireless g, Bluetooth, optional TV tuner, 7-in-1 card reader, DVI and even a three year collect and return warranty. Prices are not for the faint hearted, starting at £1,899 excluding VAT, but if you got to the bottom of this article still thinking “Yeah, that’s my next laptop”, money really isn’t an option for you anyway. Make your mates jealous by snapping one up from the link below.

The Reg is reporting rockdirect customers have received their X2 notebooks (6800 Ultra equipped until Jan). No word from Widow which, while it may not convict in court, appears rather conclusive… Brits 1 – 0 Yanks!
