Rock Band 4 compatible with old Guitar Hero instruments

Rock Band 4 will be compatible with all your old Guitar Hero instruments.

Before you start throwing away all your old plastic Guitar Hero instruments after the bombshell Guitar Hero Live won’t be compatible with any of them, there’s something you should know.

Rock Band is returning this autumn along with Guitar Hero Live, but we now know that Rock Band 4 will support all your existing guitar controllers.

That includes all those you had for the previous Rock Band games but also those you had for Guitar Hero.

We’re planning to support everything that we can. That includes all of the old Rock Band controllers and all the old Guitar Hero controllers,” explained Project Director Daniel Sussman in an interview with Business Insider.

The developers of the Rock Band franchise, Harmonix, also developed the first two Guitar Hero games. Thus, the two franchises actually share a lot of the same developmental DNA.

Guitar Hero Live won’t be compatible with any of your old kit because it introduces a brand new controller with a six-button setup – three black buttons along the top and three white on the bottom.

It aims to make the Guitar Hero Live controller experience more akin to that of playing a real guitar.

It does mean that those who have been holding onto their old Guitar Hero kit since the series went quiet back in 2011 won’t be able to use it with the new game though.

“Our position is really all about respect for our consumers and for the money hta thtey have spent to get into the game space in the first place. They spend a fortune on games: on consoles, on hardware, and we’re sensitive to that,” explained Sussman.

“We play those games too. We buy all the same stuff. A world where you need to have three different guitars and two drum set and all this stuff is… We don’t want to support that world.”
