Robots could dominate humanity by 2025, says futurist

Artificial intelligence may have been birthed in science fiction, but the threat of a Terminator takeover is very real, apparently.

A futurist has revealed to TrustedReviews that robots could dominate humanity by as soon as 2025.

“I think it could happen in the next 10 years,” Ian Pearson tells us. “You could have a computer which is conscious and smarter than a human being within ten years.

Pearson has been a full-time futurist since 1991, and has a proven track record of over 85% accuracy at the 10-year horizon.

He continues: “Other people would tell you that’s absolutely impossible and that it will never happen, but I really don’t understand why they believe that. To me, it looks like it’s obviously possible that you could do it in that timeframe.”

According to Pearson, developing a true, human-like intelligence is “inevitable” and that it’s a “natural part of human development”.

He’s not alone, however; a number of high-profile scientists and technologists – including Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, and Steve Wozniak – have warned about the potential risks of AI.

But how do we stop this impending doom? According to Pearson, we need to postpone the development of what he calls “strong AI’ until at least 2040 or 2045.

“If we were to develop a very strong AI next year or the year after, I think it would be very risky,” he explains. “We would be trusting in luck that the machine doesn’t want to take over the world and doesn’t want to kill us all.”

Pearson says that by 2045, we will have the technology to augment the brain to the point where we can have “an IQ of 100,000 rather than 150”.

This bionic progression will mean we’re less likely to succumb to the threat of robot overlords.

“I think most of us are aware of the risks and most people can see some point of delaying it a little while,” says the futurist. “But you can’t stop some rogue regime or terrorist group or a lone mad scientist trying his best to develop this stuff all by himself.”

He adds: “It’s the sort of thing you could do in a teenager’s bedroom – just like we’ve seen with the hackers getting into TalkTalk.”
