Rio 2016 Olympics opening ceremony: How to watch online for free

The Olympics officially kicks off at midnight on Friday and it’s set to be the biggest party of the year. And, like all good parties, it will run on late into the night. Here’s how you can watch all of the action.

On Friday, the Olympic sporting circus rolls back into Rio De Janeiro and with it comes a month of physical exertion as well what we hope will be some great telly.  However, before we all become armchair experts in canoe slalom or Greco-Roman Wrestling we have the opening ceremony to enjoy. Anticipated to be the largest party in Rio you won’t want to miss out.

How to watch Rio 2016 Olympics Opening Ceremony

If you’re staying in to catch all the action then you’ll need to be prepared for a late night. The show is set to start at midnight on Friday and continue until 2am. As usual, the BBC are the official broadcasters so head over to BBC One where they will be rolling out coverage from as early as 8pm.

Provided you have a TV License, simply head over to BBC iPlayer on your computer and you can watch a full stream:

Not going to be in front of the television at midnight on a Friday? You can stream the show on your tablet or phone in whatever bar you’re in.  Simply head over to Google Play or the App Store and download the BBC iPlayer app. As long as you’ve got a good data connection– or you’re on Wi-Fi – you’ll be able to party alongside Rio until the early hours.

Those lucky viewers with a virtual reality headset and a compatible phone will be able to take the party to a different level and watch the opening show in full 360° virtual reality. The BBC is set to release it’s own VR app on Friday, which you can read all about here.
