3D, big wave surfing, storm chasing. We’ve all seen it all before. But, have you seen it all on one show before?
Sky 3D’s latest big budget 3D spectacle, Storm Surfers 3D, follows two surfing veterans, Ross Clarke-Jones and Tom Carroll, as they travel around the world chasing the biggest and baddest waves the planet has to offer. Shot fully in 3D HD, it brings you closer than ever before to the experience of riding on the face of towering 20ft waves.
We had a sneak peak of the first episode of the four-part series and were genuinely impressed at the quality of the 3D footage and at the accessibility of the show. Far from being your typical whipper-snapper surf dudes, the 49 and 50 year old Clarke-Jones and Carroll are serious about their life as professional surfers, and it’s great fun watching the long time surfing-partners take on the biggest waves head first – bad backs, dodgy knees and stiff necks be damned.
There’s a distinct whiff of contrivance to the show, just as there is with many of these recent docu-drama series, such as Deadliest Catch or Ice-road Truckers, but it’s not over egged so remains an easy watch for the cynics among you.
Sky 3D is technically free but it only comes with a subscription to Sky Entertainment Extra, Sky Movies and the HD Pack, a selection that will cost you £65.75 a month.
So, perhaps Storm Surfing 3D won’t be cause enough on its own for you to take out a subscription but if you are a customer it’s worth keeping an eye out for Storm Surfing 3D when it arrives in September.
