Back in December, Twitter rolled out a limited number of brand pages to high profile companies such as American Express, Best Buy and Coca Cola, however these pages weren’t much different to regular Twitter pages.
A report in Business Insider claims that the company is preparing to roll out enhanced profile pages after 1 February which will give brands the ability to build platforms on their pages that could include iFrame environments, allowing users to play games or shop on a brand’s site without actually leaving the Twitter environment.
This is a move which will be seen as direct repeat of what Facebook did with its brand pages, with a lot of the same functionality.
The details come from a source who has received a briefing on the topic from a senior Twitter executive regarding the company’s Q2 product rollout plan.
In other Twitter news, the company has confirmed that it is changing the way in which it censors tweets. It will now be able to removed offending tweets from certain countries while leaving them viewable by users in other countries.
This means that if a tweet is viewed as offensive by a certain country, Twitter will remove that tweet in the country in question but not globally as was previously the case. This will mean tweets will remain visible to as many people as possible, according to Twitter.
“One of our core values as a company is to defend and respect each user’s voice,” Twitter wrote in a blogpost. “We try to keep content up wherever and whenever we can, and we will be transparent with users when we can’t. The tweets must continue to flow.”
Twitter currently has 100 million active users but is looking to expand to 1 billion users and to do this will need to expand to countries it previously has not targeted. However to do this, the service will probably have to bend to the laws of the countries.
