If you think your Facebook News Feed is cluttered now, it may be about to get a lot worse, according to reports on Tuesday.
Bloomberg sources say the company is planning to house TV-style commercials with the feeds of users and will charge advertisers a whopping $2.5m (£1.63m) a day for the privilege, in some cases.
The report claimed the commercials will be 15-seconds long and will appear directly in the News Feeds of targeted users, with those spots appearing up to three times a day.
According to Bloomberg’s ‘people familiar with the matter’ the commercials will be hi-def and boast “easy-to-use playback features.” However, the report doesn’t state whether the ads will be auto play or require users to manually hit the play button. Considering most folks’ attitude to advertising within their web content, the former wouldn’t be surprising.
It’s likely that users ages, genders and interests would form the content of the ads, so now you know where all of those ‘Likes’ are going.
The idea for Facebook is to capitalise on the amount of eyes cast over its various portals every day and night in order to win lucrative advertising coin away from the television market.
The report doesn’t mention when the feature will launch but does say it has been pushed back twice already over features the user experience will be “tainted” by the presence of the ads.
If we were to speculate, the mention of 15-second ads, also raises suspicions that the Video on Instagram feature may also become a venue for ads, given Facebook’s ownership of the platform.
