It’s widely expected that Apple’s next iPhone will feature a Force Touch display, but it’s still not exactly clear what that entails.
However, a new report by 9to5Mac claims insider knowledge on the inner workings of the iPhone 6S screen.
According to the article, the display will have three discrete levels of sensitivity – dubbed ‘3D Touch Screen’.
For the unaware, Force Touch is a press-sensitive surface technology that lets users perform different control actions based on how hard they press a device.
It’s already been rolled out in the display of the Apple Watch, and the trackpad of this year’s 12-inch MacBook.
However, both of those interpretations of Force Touch only offer up two levels of pressure sensitivity – the difference between a tap and a press.
By contrast, it’s reported that the iPhone 6S will be able to distinguish between a tap, a press, and a “deeper press”.
These will allow for a range of new gestures on the handset, which are set to be rolled out in the upcoming iOS 9.
The report cites anonymous sources, so unfortunately we have no way of verifying such information.

Whatever the case, we don’t have long to wait until Apple reveals all of the details on its next iPhone.
That’s because the Cupertino-based company has scheduled a launch event for September 9 – that’s the Wednesday coming.
