iPad 3 Case Reveals More Details [Update]

Special report: iPad 3 / New iPad : What You Need To Know
Hands on: iPad 3 Review

Leaked images of the rear casing of what is supposed to be the iPad 3 have emerged online and have highlighted significant differences between it and the iPad 2.

Repair Labs Blog has received an image of the inside of the back housing of the iPad 3 from “industry insiders in China.” The guys at the website have released a photo of this housing alongside the current iPad 2 to highlighted the differences.

The first difference (marked A) is the mount for the logic board which Repairs Labs Blog speculates could mean that the iPad 3 will have a much larger batter (B) which is a rumour we’ve heard before and something which would be very welcome.

The next difference (C) is the camera, which looks to be considerably different if the casing is anything to go by and another leaked image of the exterior of the back casing, received by Apple.pro, seems to show a much larger camera lens.

The final difference relates to the LCD screen, with a different mounting seen on the rear casing of the iPad 3. While this doesn’t give an indication of the resolution of the screen on the new Apple tablet, reports suggest that the screen resolution will be double that of the iPad 2, with a Retina Display 2,048×1,536 pixels.

According to sources quoted by The Verge, the new iPad will receive a major boost in terms of the GPU on the new A6 chip, however the A6 chip may not be quad-core but will remain dual-core like the A5 CPU – however with the tight integration between software and hardware in Apple products this may not hinder the iPad 3’s performance compared to quad-core tablets like the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime.

Whatever the veracity of these rumours, it seems likely that the iPad 3 will see a big improvement in screen quality, a larger battery and a new A6 chip powering everything. The camera may get a small boost, but considering that many people don’t use the camera anyway, this is not a priority for us.

Apple launched the iPad 2 on 2 March last year and we expect to see the next generation of the iPad to be launched around the same time this year, meaning we only have to wait a few weeks to see if these rumours are true.
