Redmi K30 Pro rumoured to miss out on huge Xiaomi feature

A new report has shed light on the specs that we can expect from the upcoming Redmi K30 Pro. There’s some good news, but the camera isn’t what we hoped for.

The Redmi K30 is set to run on a Snapdragon 865 chipset, possibly enabling 5G connectivity, but the camera is expected to remain as a 64-megapixel sensor rather than adopting Xiaomi’s record-breaking 108-megapixel sensor.

That’s according to a report by XDA Developers, who have obtained the build.prop file for the device, suspected to be codenamed “lmi”. The related Geekbench performance stats are commensurate with the Snapdragon 865, while the codename wasn’t present on a previously-uncovered list of Xiaomi phones under development with the 108-megapixel sensor.

The Redmi K30 Pro has upgraded specs compared to its counterpart, the Redmi K30, which was released in China in December 2019. That device nonetheless boasted a 6.67-inch screen with a stunning 120Hz refresh rate, along with a quadruple-camera set-up that also is headlined by the same 64-megapixel main sensor alongside an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens and dual 2-megapixel sensors (one a macro camera and the other a depth sensor). The highest-spec variant offers 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM, backed up with a Snapdragon 730G chipset. A 5G version of the device launched in January.

Last year’s Redmi K20 Pro arrived on these shores branded as the Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro and we were very impressed with the device, awarding it 4.5 stars out of 5 and describing it as “the perfect stopgap device that feels and performs like a top-tier flagship, without a sky-high price”. The sharp design encased impressive internals which outperformed the likes of dedicated gaming phones like the Razer Phone 2 and the ASUS ROG Phone, while the camera was equally impressive, capturing great levels of detail in still images and with the capability of recording 4K video at 60fps. There are couple of points for improvement – such as introducing wateproofing and tightening up the software – but overall it’s a very impressive device that the Redmi K30 Pro will do well to live up to.
