Reddit finally has official apps for Android and iOS

Over the years, the world’s most popular websites have pretty much all accepted that a highly functioning mobile app was crucial to keeping up traffic. Well, except Reddit.

Today, the site has launched official clients for both iOS and Android, designed to replace the unofficial Alien Blue app for iOS it purchased in late 2014.

While Alien Blue will remain supported by Reddit, the team is being moved over to work on the new official apps that rock the Reddit name for the first time.

Unfortunately, newcomers won’t be able to download Blue Alien once the new and improved Reddit app is released.

In a post on the site, Ashley Higgins the product manager in charge of the apps, said: “What started last year as a plan to update Alien Blue to make it bigger and better – grew into a much bigger project.

We now have a beautiful, functional new app for iOS that we’re confident will be the best way to access Reddit content on your phone.

The new app will bring customised themes as well as modes designed for day night usage.

As Engadget points out, Reddit is also offering three months of access to the ad-free Reddit Gold if you sign up for the app during launch.

Product manager Ashley Higgins assured: “There won’t be a paid/premium version – all features will be available unpaid. The one paid component will be ad-removal, which will likely be tied to a Gold subscription (applies across platforms).”
