Quirky Microsoft Mouse Includes 1GB Flash

Innovative mouse refresh from the big MS.

While we can’t say mice are the most interesting peripherals, we do occasionally see something worth mentioning. Whether Microsoft has created a revelation or a gimmick here is a matter for debate, but full marks for innovation. Considering that USB ports are something of a premium in a notebook, anything that can free up precious space is always welcome, so with that in mind Microsoft has bundled 1GB of flash memory into the transceiver of its Mobile Memory Mouse 8000

The mouse itself uses 2.4GHz wireless and is claimed to last three weeks on a single charge, though how that figure was arrived at isn’t specified. On the subject of charging, a cable is bundled which connects to the mouse and USB stick magnetically and I doubt I’m alone in finding that rather neat.

Two other wireless mice are also making their debuts, in the form of the Wireless Laser Mouse 7000 and Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000; no prizes for guessing how they are connected. The former offers such nifty features as a dedicated button for Vistas Flip 3D interface and four-way scrolling, the latter of which is a highly under-appreciated function. The Bluetooth model is a pretty standard affair, merely offering forward and back buttons in addition too the usual two.

Both the 7000 and 5000 carry £39.99 RRPs and are available as of next month, while the 8000 will be on sale at the same time, but for a heftier £74.99. Still, that’s the price of freedom, or at least a USB port’s freedom.
