Qualcomm’s next flagship smartphone chip is nearly here

The Snapdragon 820 is Qualcomm’s next major mobile chip, but details are still light right now.

Fortunately, Qualcomm is tipped for an imminent unveiling of the upcoming high-end processor.

According to a China-based source (via GForGames), the company will fully detail the Snapdragon 820 on August 11.

That’s reportedly going to happen at a press conference in Los Angeles. We’ve asked Qualcomm for confirmation.

Qualcomm first mentioned the existence of the Snapdragon 820 back at Mobile World Congress in March.

All we know so far is that the chip will use custom-built “Kyro” processor cores.

Qualcomm has already built its own processor cores previously, as with the “Krait” CPU that appears in its high-end chips.

However, the “Kyro” cores have yet to make an appearance on any chip, and will debut on the Snapdragon 820.

We’ve got no idea what kind of performance improvements we’ll see from the new cores just yet.

It’s expected, however, that the Snapdragon 820 will begin sampling with manufacturers in the second half of 2015.

That means we’ll start to see the chip at the end of this year or, more likely, in early 2016.
