Qualcomm denies LG chose Snapdragon 808 over 810’s overheating fears

Processing giant Qualcomm has moved to quell fears another manufacturer has moved away from its flagship 810 chip due to overheating fears.

LG confirmed the long-awaited G4 handset on Tuesday preferring the previous generation Snapdragon 808 processor over this year’s octo-core model.

With several phone makers, including Samsung, ditching the 810 for its own solutions, fears have grown for the future of the chip.

Qualcomm has claimed LG selected the G4 was made ‘over a year ago’ and said the decision to go with the 808 has nothing to do with the persistent rumours surrounding the 810.

“The decisions on which chipsets to put on which handsets come from over a year ago,” Qualcomm’s head of marketing Tim McDonough said (via CNET), while once again shooting down the overheating speculation.

Earlier on Tuesday a Qualcomm spokesperson said the choice was made with the G4’s battery life in mind: “It delivers the optimal balance between power and performance,” the representative said.

Qualcomm has been on a PR offensive this year as it seeks to save the 810 from becoming a total flop. In a statement released in February, the company published affirmations from  the likes of Motorola, Sony, Microsoft and LG claiming they plan to fit forthcoming devices with the Snapdragon 810.

At the time LG’s Yongsu Choi said: “I heard there was concern about Snapdragon 810 overheats since last year. But I think there can be some issues at [the] development stage and also that [those] kind of issues can be overcome by great engineers who never give up.”

The LG G4 was revealed in full on Tuesday following months of speculation and teasers. Alongside that six core Snapdragon 808 chipset is 3G RAM, a 16-megapixel primary camera, a 5.5-inch QHD display and Android 5.1 Lollipop.
