Qualcomm announces chip to create truly smart connected lightbulbs

In the quest to make smart homes smarter in 2015, Qualcomm has unveiled its smart lighbulb tech that can connect with other devices in your home.

Having already shown of its concept back in 2013, Qualcomm President Derek Aberle confirmed the chip-maker’s intentions to go big on smart lighting.

Announced at the company’s CES 2015 press conference, Qualcomm has teamed up with start-up LIFX to produce the tiny module that utilises Qualcomm’s Athero chipset and packs a CPU, Wi-Fi and LEDs that can then be controlled from your smartphone.

That’s not necessarily something new as Philips Hue lighting has been doing something similar for a few years now, but what’s different is that the smart module will be able to integrate with Qualcomms’s AllSeen and AllJoyn platforms.

This means it will be able to connect and be controlled by other smart services in your home, whether that’s reacting to someone opening a fridge or even changing to suit a switch up in music that’s playing on your connected audio system.

The module is going to be available to any companies that are interested in incorporating the technology to their products and we should hopefully see the first products roll out later this year.

Aside from the smart light bulb lighting announcement, Qualcomm also announced that it has now shipped 1 billion Snapdragon-powered smartphones and revealed more details about the Snapdragon 810 processor, which is set to power the LG G Flex 2 curved smartphone.
