I feel like I may have given Sony a bit of a bashing recently, suggesting as I have that unless you want to mess around with using the PS3 as an HTPC, you only have the one (exclusive) game worth playing on the thing. Let us not forget, then, that Sony also has another console, of the portable variety and it’s selling rather well, the new Slim & Lite version having just reached the one million units sold marker in Japan.
The PSP’s predecessor took two weeks further to reach the same marker, while the big brother, the PS3, took eight months to manage as many sales. Overall sales of the PSP are now in the region of 26 million, which sounds impressive, until you notice the 54 million or so DS sales in a similar time period. Perhaps Sony should start its own series of patronising adverts implying all girls play Nintendogs on a pink console? Then again, perhaps not; although there is now a much wider variety of packages, such as, shall we say, Seamstress Red, than at the original release to tempt prospective Nintendo customers over to the dark side.
Regardless of its rival’s success, there’s no denying that increased uptake of the PSP is good not just for Sony, but for all owners; we need more developers to produce Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters quality games to rival the offerings such as Zelda on the DS and the more people buy PSPs the more developers will code for the console. That, if you missed it, was a subtle hint to buy one if you already haven’t.
