PS4 update will add MP3 and CD support, just not in time for launch

Sony has announced that it is working on a PS4 update which will bring MP3 and CD support to the next-gen console.

Following a public outcry to the recent revelations that the upcoming console would not offer support for audio CDs or MP3 files, Sony has announced that it is working on plans for a downloadable fix, although the update will not be available in time for the imminent PS4 release date.

While the lack of PS4 support for audio CDs and MP3 files has angered many as a potential ploy to force users to sign up to the company’s Music Unlimited services, Sony has suggested that it has been left “surprised” by the reactions to a feature it did not see as a day-one priority.

The biggest surprise for us all internally at Sony was there are so many people who passionately reacted to our announcement that there’s no MP3 support or CD support on day one,” Shuhei Yoshida, Sony’s President of Worldwide Studios stated in a recent interview.

He added: “It’s not like we actively decided ‘let’s not do this feature so people will have to subscribe to Music Unlimited.

“The focus has been more on the game features. Some of the features we wanted but we couldn’t get in on day one.”

Revealing the company is currently working on a fix, Yoshida added: “We didn’t really think about MP3 or CD. We thought ‘we’re going to do that eventually.’… It caught us off-guard. People don’t really talk about these features, right? Some people get really mad and [say] ‘I’ll cancel my pre-order!’ So as we speak, people in Japan – the system guys – are discussing when we can put these features in.”

With the PS4 set to hit US retailers this Friday, November 15, a UK based PS4 release date has been pencilled in for two weeks’ time on November 29. Ahead of the console’s arrival, early PS4 pre-orders have seen the gamer sell out across a number of retailers.
