PS4 sales to see 16m consoles ship this year

With a Sony PS4 release date having been confirmed for the 2013 holiday season, latest reports have suggested Sony will ship 16 million PS4 consoles this year.

Citing “sources from PS4 component makers,” latest reports have suggested Sony is anticipating strong uptake of its next-gen gamer, with the Japanese manufacturer reportedly looking to ship 16 million PS4 consoles later this year, a figure that would equate to a little over the 77 million PS3 units sold to date.

With shipments expected to kick off in August in a bid to satisfy launch demand, it has been claimed that manufacturing specialists Pegatron and Foxconn, the company responsible for piecing together Apple’s iPhone 5 and iPad mini, will be tasked with piecing together Sony’s rival to the expected Xbox 720.

“Sony internally expects the machine’s annual shipments to reach 16 million units in 2013 with the supply chain expected to start mass shipments in August,” the unnamed sources reportedly told Digitimes.

Although unit shipments do not translate directly to overall console sales, the lofty launch figures show considerable faith from Sony in the recently unveiled PS4.

Sony PS4 Release Date
Following the console’s formal unveiling last month, Sony confirmed that a PS4 release date would be held during the ‘holiday 2013’ period.
Although the company has yet to specify a precise date of arrival, it has been mooted that the console could hit US and Japanese markets first ahead of a more widespread, global rollout in early 2014.

Quoting “development sources with working knowledge of both next generation consoles,” recent reports suggested that “complexities involved in European distribution” have caused Sony to push a PS4 UK release date back until “early 2014.”

“We’re told that PlayStation 4 will launch in Japan and the US by Christmas, with a Euro rollout following in early 2014,” in industry insiders said.

Earlier this week it was suggested that although a version of the game will eventually make it to Sony’s next-gen console, a GTA V PS4 release will not be available when the console hits retailers.
