PS4 price leaks around $400 ahead of February 20 launch

Ahead of the February 20 PS4 launch event, new PlayStation 4 rumours have suggested that the PS4 price will see wannabe owners required to fork out ‘above $400’.

Suggesting that Sony will formally out its next-generation console later this month, Japanese news outlet Asahi Shimbun has claimed that the PS4 price will see gamers in Sony’s native Japan forced to splash out 40,000 yen ($427, £272) to snap up the expectant Nintendo Wii U rival.

Tipped to hit retailers a third cheaper than the launch of its PS3 predecessor, latest PS4 rumours have suggested the eagerly awaited console will be made available in Japan and the US later this year with a PS4 UK release date to follow in early 2014.

Far from official, the latest PS4 price claims have failed to indicate whether the upcoming console will launch as a single or multiple SKUs, with recently leaked PS4 specs suggesting a $400 price tag would see the next-gen gamer sold at a considerable loss.

Far from the first time that the PS4 price tag has been rumoured for around the $400 mark, earlier this year, industry analysts at Baird Equity Research suggested that an October PS4 release date would see Sony’s next-gen console land alongside a $400 price tag.

PS4 Rumours
With Sony confirming that it will hold a PlayStation themed launch event in New York on February 20, the upcoming announcement, dubbed “see the future”, is widely expected to be the launch platform for a PS4 release date announcement.

Offering an insight into the potential PS4 specs, a flurry of recent rumours have suggested the Xbox 720 competitor will play host to an eight-core processor as well as a new PS4 controller that will feature a touchpanel section in place of the customary start/select buttons.

Would you be tempted by the PS4 if its sported a $400 PS4 price tag or is that too much when the PS3 is serving its purpose just fine? Share your thoughts on the matter with us via the TrustedReviews Twitter and Facebook feeds or through the comment boxes below.
