PS4 PlayStation app features detailed by Sony

Sony has offered more information on the official PS4 PlayStation app, which will be free to download on iOS and Android.

Originally unveiled during the Tokyo Game Show keynote, Sony has provided further details on the functionality of the PS4 PlayStation app.

Speaking to Shuhei Yoshida, the official EU PlayStation blog has outlined some of the function of the upcoming PlayStation app, which should launch with the PS4.

“It’s an application that anyone can download for free on iOS and Android devices,” explained Yoshida. “There are a variety of things you can do with it. You can connect to your PlayStation profile, and send messages – even voice messages – to friends between your smartphone and PS4.”

Offering a so-called PS4 experience on tablets and smartphones, gamers will be able to stay in touch with their friends, compare trophies and watch PS4 recorded or live-streamed gameplay and more using the PlayStation app.

“A friend on PS4 can also send out an invitation for a multiplayer game, which you can then check on the App, and you can also purchase PS4 games from PlayStation Store. Your game will immediately start downloading while you’re away.”

Utilising the PS4 Cloud, it seems that there could be increased connectivity between Sony’s next-generation console and the official companion app.

As well as designed PS4 UI features, the PlayStation app can also be utilised as a second-screen experience for compatible titles, which already include PlayStation Camera game The PlayRoom.

“There are many big publishers creating their own apps for their games, like Watch_Dogs or Battlefield and that’s great,” added Yoshida. “But smaller developers can use PlayStation App to connect to PS4 and load an application, like drawing software for example, so that you don’t have to download and install a specific app on your smartphone. It’s open to all PS4 developers to use.”

Sony has said there will be more PlayStation App features unveiled before it is released, which we expect to tie in with the November 29 PS4 release date in the UK.
