PS4 beats Xbox One to win TrustedReviews Award

In what has been the most exciting year ever for the games industry, Sony’s PS4 has beaten the Xbox One to claim the TrustedReviews Console of the Year Award.

Taking top honours in one of the most hotly contested categories of the 2013 TrustedReviews Awards, the PS4 has claimed victory over its leading rival thanks to its collection of next-gen graphics and substantial online features package, all available at an affordable price.

With both next-gen consoles hitting the UK back in November, the PS4 has taken the console crown for 2013, with both the consumer vote and judges’ favour falling firmly on the side of the latest PlayStation offering.

A clear favourite with consumers, the PS4 raked in a staggering 49.73 per cent of the public vote, more than double the 19.71 per cent achieved by the rival Xbox One. Amazingly, the ageing PS3, with exclusives like The Last of Us, gave the newer Xbox One a run for its money, securing 11.21 per cent of the public vote.

It’s clear that momentum is behind the PS4 but the huge gap in the reader vote surprised me,” Evan Kypreos, Editor of TrustedReviews said.

“Microsoft got a lot wrong with the marketing of the Xbox One and has lost a lot of goodwill with gamers.”

While the PS4 has been awarded the 2013 TrustedReviews Console of the Year award, this year marks just the first of many head-to-head battles that will be fought between the latest PlayStation and the Xbox One.

“Personally, I don’t think that there’s much in it as products,” Kypreos added. “The Xbox One may well win out in the long term particularly in terms of the innovative new Kinect features, but Sony wins this year because it hasn’t alienated the masses.”

Earlier this month Sony confirmed that the PS4, a console we described as “a more gamer orientated console than the Xbox One” in our review, had notched up a staggering 2.1 million unit sales during the console’s first 18 days on sale.
