PS3 tops Netflix streaming charts

Netflix has revealed that the Sony PS3 is the most popular device used for streaming its video content.

In a posting on the official PlayStation US blog, it was revealed that “More people stream Netflix content to their televisions via PS3 than any other device worldwide.” Considering the wide array of Netflix-capable devices in the living room – including close PS3 rival the Microsoft Xbox 360 – this is quite an achievement.

While these figures relate only to living room devices that hooked up directly to the TV, the PS3 remains highly competitive even when including PCs in the equation.

“PS3 is our largest TV-connected platform in terms of Netflix viewing,” confirmed Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, “and this year, at times, even surpassed the PC in hours of Netflix enjoyment to become our number one platform overall.”

So how did the PS3 come to lead the way with Netflix usage? As the blog post points out, the PS3 Netflix partnership has been a close and fruitful one.

The PS3 was the first entertainment system to support a 1080p resolution and 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus audio within its Netflix app. It was also the first to allow you to sign up for the service through the device itself, rather than simply logging into a pre-existing account.

It also led the way with implementing advance options like alternate audio and second screen controls. As Hastings points out, the PS3 aids Netflix in “developing and first deploying our most advanced features.”

Netflix is continuing to push new features through its PS3 app, including a bold new voice-initiated interface called MAX, which is currently being tested.
