Pokémon Go Special Research Quest Walkthrough: How to catch Celebi
If you missed out on catching Celebi at the Pokémon Go’s recent Chicago event, then you’ll be happy to know you now have another chance at grabbing the mythical creature.
A new ‘Special Research Quest’ is now available to complete in order to get your hands on Celebi.

For any of you not in the know, Celebi is a mythical Pokémon that hails from the Johto region (i.e. the setting for Pokémon Gold and Silver, the second generation of the original series).
Special Research Quests are reserved for the game’s rarest creatures. The only previous special quest was to catch the mythical Mew, which attained legendary status for being impossible to catch in the original game without either attending special events or pulling some serious trickery within the game.
Don’t worry if you’ve yet to complete the Mew quest however, the new Special Research Quest simply appears below your existing tasks.
How to catch Celebi in Pokémon Go
Much like the existing research quest, the Celebi quest line consists of eight rounds tasks.
We don’t yet know what specifically is involved with every round, but sleuths over on Reddit have already pieced together the first six rounds of tasks.
We’ll be updating this list of quests as the community learns more about what’s in store.

- Power up a Pokémon five times
- Battle in a Gym two times
- Battle in a raid
Round 2:
- Make three new Friends
- Catch a Pokémon three days in a row
- Evolve an evolved grass-type Pokémon
Round 3:
- Reach level 25
- Use a Sun Stone to evolve Gloom or Sunkern
- Evolve an evolved Grass-type Pokémon
Round 4:

- Evolve Eevee into Espeon during the day

Round 5:

Round 6:

In addition to these rounds, Chrales on Twitter has unearthed a number of new tasks that are expected to appear in later rounds (where {0} indicates that the specific number is not yet know). However, we are yet to see anyone reach this round within the game to confirm it for ourselves.
- Catch {0} Grass- or Psychic-type Pokémon
- Earn a Gold Johto medal
- Trade Pokémon {0} times
Although we don’t yet know which order these tasks will appear in, it would be worthwhile saving up items that you know you’ll need

If you’ve already gained access to Celebi, completing all eight rounds will net you more Candy for the creature, allowing you to power up your existing catch.
As well as releasing Celebi, Niantic has also included a number of other Gen-2 features in the game. There’s a Celebi T-shirt available in the Style Shop, and there’ll be other themed avatar items available which will unlock alongside your medal progress.
