Claims to beat every smart phone on the market and render full web pages.
We’ve heard a lot in the last 12 months about the improved surfing abilities of smartphones – Microsoft is doing its best to spruce up the browsers now too – but is there still an argument to be made for a dedicated device?
In the minds of disty Widget the answer is most definitely ‘yes’ since it has announced it is brining the fabled ‘PocketSurfer 2’ to the UK this spring. Made by DataWind, the original PocketSurfer was shown off way back in 2004 but ultimately became vapourware. Three years later, its sequel has made it to market.
In a nutshell, the key feature of the PocketSurfer 2 is a boast that it can display full graphics web pages in their original glory in an impressive five to seven seconds. A statement Widget felt so strongly about it recently ran a ‘Speed Challenge’ at Channel Expo offering a free unit to anyone whose current handheld device proved to be faster (no word yet on if it had to cough up…)
The reason behind this confidence is the PocketSurfer 2 has a fully integrated celluar radio-modem meaning download speeds should be relatively stable compared to the signal fluctuations that haunt mobile phone users. A fully backlit Qwerty keyboard also makes it aboard.
Sadly at this stage however that’s about as much as we know about this intriguing device. I’ll be sure to run an update when I get more but until then treat it will all the excitement or cynicism you can muster.
Certainly shakes things up a bit…
