Plex adds new DVR feature to media streaming arsenal – what you need to know

Plex’s media streaming platform is getting a perhaps overdue upgrade that will allow you to record and stream programmes from virtually anywhere in the world to almost any device you could want.

Plex DVR, as the new feature is called, works by pairing the Plex Media Server with a digital antenna and HDHomeRun tuner. The company says that US viewers will be able to access premium content from major networks, like ABC, NBC, Fox and others over-the-air without the need for a cable subscription. In the UK, participating broadcasters at launch include the BBC and ITV.

The new DVR option also brings a programme guide that will recommend upcoming show you might want to record, based on your viewing habits and what other titles you already have in your libraries.

Part of the appeal of Plex is the variety of apps its offers to users of different platforms, and its new DVR functionality is no different. You’ll be able to play back shows on pretty much any mainstream device, including Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, Chromecase, Amazon Fire, PlayStation and more – it’s truly multi-platform.

If you’re not entirely ready to cut your cable subscription and go on-demand, Plex DVR will also support digital tuners that can deliver DRM-protected content, with one notable exception: Game of Thrones, which is only accessible via encrypted HBO feeds.

While recording and viewing content through Plex DVR will be completely free, you will need a premium Plex Pass subscription to unlock the feature, which will cost you anywhere between £3.99 per month up to £119.99 for a lifetime subscription.

Other features that come with a Plex Pass include Mobile and Cloud Sync plus additional apps and music capabilities.
