Plex arrives on PS3 and PS4 to allow media streaming from PC

Sony PS3 and PS4 owners can now stream their digital video files to the console from their PC or Mac.

The launch of the app (via Engadget) enables Plex Plus subscribers to access full HD MP4 files on their console via the free Plex Media Server.

The server also gives PlayStation owners the opportunity to access their friends’ media files as well as their own.

The $4.99 a month (about £3) Plex Plan subscription (it’s $149.99 for life) enables Xbox and PlayStation streaming, while it’ll also work with iOS and Android devices, the Amazon Fire TV and Roku streaming boxes and Vizio Smart TVs.

Account holders will be able to create custom profiles and choose who is able to access the files. Also, thanks to the Plex server, users are able to access all content remotely over the cloud rather than relying on the home Wi-Fi network.

Interestingly, the Plex app will automatically gather high quality trailers and extras to accompany files within the user’s media library. Subscribers can also choose to back up all of their smartphone photos.

The PlayStation compatibility comes a full two months after the Xbox One gained the app, so the launch represents a nice boost for PlayStation owners looking to dive into their Christmas movie library and send it to the living room TV.

The free app is also a great solution for the lack of media streaming through traditional DLNA. It can be downloaded from the PlayStation Store now.
