PlayStation VR specs confirmed in official preview video

Sony has offered another look at the finished design for the PlayStation VR headset, while confirming a lot of the official specs.

In a video posted online this week, the company also reaffirmed the virtual reality device for Sony PS4 will go on sale in the first half of 2016.

The one minute clip confirms a 5.7-inch OLED display, with a 1080p resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate offering super low latency at under 18ms.

The PlayStation VR will have an approximate 100-degree field of view, along with an accelerometer and gyroscope for motion sensing.

There’s positional tracking with 9 LEDs and 360 degree head tracking. There’s also 3D audio on board with a stereo mini jack and mic input.

There’s a social element too, with the headset action relayed back to the television set, in order to keep all of the players involved as spectators.

The promise to launch by mid-2016 will put Sony’s device in the same ballpark as the Facebook-owned Oculus Rift headset. The HTC Vive, made in collaboration with Valve is likely to beat both to market.

Like its rivals in the VR market, Sony is refusing to reveal how much the PlayStation VR will cost, but it’s likely to be at least as much as the PS4 itself.

At the recent Paris Games Week event, Sony did reveal storied franchises Tekken and Gran Truismo will be among the games coming to PlayStation VR.
