PlatinumGames wants to finish Scalebound, but it’s all up to Microsoft

After the successful kickstarter campaign for The Wonderful 101 Remastered, PlatinumGames has touched on another project it would love to revisit if given the chance.

First announced as an Xbox One exclusive way back in 2014, PlatinumGames worked on Scalebound until 2017 when it was suddenly cancelled by Microsoft. It was in the works for a number of years, and the studio seems keen to return to it if given the opportunity.

Speaking to Eurogamer Portugal, Platinum’s Atsushi Inaba opened up on the potential of such an idea: “Again, it’s a good question! But this was an intellectual property that belongs 100% to Microsoft. Whatever happens with this project, we can’t really do anything with it unless Microsoft leaves us. But it’s a game that we fall in love with and love if the opportunity arises, it’s something we would love to return to.”

So, it would take Microsoft to strike up a conversation for a Scalebound revival to become a reality, and that seems to be a far-fetched situation. However, under the leadership of Phil Spencer, Xbox has begun taking Japanese game developers far more seriously than before.

Scalebound would have followed Drew, a young man accompanied by a Dragon known as Thulan. Their lives are tied together, meaning if one passes away it’s lights out for the other. This partnership was set to tie into the game’s overall narrative and gameplay mechanics in some fascinating ways, too.

Given it was the trend a few years ago, four player co-op would also play as a massive role as you teamed up with other dragonriders to take down truly massive enemies. Sadly, it wasn’t meant to be. Time will tell whether Scalebound ever resurfaces, but stranger things have happened.
