Plants vs Zombies 2 confirmed for July 18 release date

PopCap has announced the Plants vs Zombies 2 release date, with the app arriving on iOS platforms July 18.

The sequel to the immensely popular strategy game will be called Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time and will be available from July 18 on iPod Touch, iPad and iPhone devices worldwide.

Similar to the recently released Cut the Rope: Time Travel game released, Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time will seemingly feature some elements of time travelling.

“[Plants vs. Zombies 2] continues the epic struggle of plants defending your brainz against zombies from your backyard through the vast reaches of time, both past and future,” said PopCap.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 will be free to download, but will offer freemium upgrades and in-game items to purchase separately. Players will be able to “face every zombie and access every level in every world at no cost”, only choosing to purchase additional content if they so wish.

Offering a host of new themed worlds, Plants vs. Zombies has “dozens” of new levels and features “special plant upgrades and other tools and weapons”. Ancient Egypt, the Wild West and the Pirate Seas have already been confirmed as some of the themed worlds introduced with Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time.

Players will also have access to “all-new touchscreen power-ups that enable players to ‘break the fourth wall’ and interact with zombies directly, as well as via plant defences.”

The Plants vs. Zombies 2 sequel was officially announced in March with a teaser release date of early summer. However, it has now been revealed that iOS platforms can download the game for free from July 18. There’s no word yet on an Android release date for Plants vs. Zombies 2.

“We’re confident that players will see the love and attention we’ve put into this game,” said Allen Murray, the game’s Senior Producer. “We’ve created wild new ways to experience the plants and zombies you know and love as well as packing the game with tons of completely new content, and we’re still hard at work coming up with even more cool stuff that will keep Plants vs. Zombies 2 fresh and evolving in the months and years following launch.”
