Plants vs. Zombies 2 arriving early summer

PopCap has confirmed that Plants vs. Zombies 2, the sequel to the highly popular original blockbuster, will be launching sometime in early summer.

Starting life as a petal-powered strategy game on PC and Mac platforms, the original Plants vs. Zombies game has been a big hit on iOS and Android devices like the iPad mini and Samsung Galaxy S3. An acquisition of EA Games, PopCap has announced that it will be releasing a sequel to its fans in “early summer”.

Although no further details have been given out, the game is sure to feature a whole new cast of plants and zombies to play with.

To bide time until Plants vs. Zombies 2 arrives in the App Store, players can content themselves with Plants vs. Zombies Adventures, a social adaptation of the game for Facebook users. Launching today in a closed beta format, the game will launch for all users “later this spring”.

Plants vs. Zombies Adventures is the first title to take the game “beyond the confines of the backyard”, according to PopCap. Levels also known as a series of roadtrips will have players fighting zombies with their shrubbery arsenal whilst travelling to new locations.

“Plants vs. Zombies Adventures is a highly accessible, zombie-zapping adaptation of the original game designed specifically for Facebook,” said Curt Bererton, head of PopCap’s San Francisco studio. “The game not only offers up exclusive new plants and zombies along with old favourites, it features all-new forms of zombie combat that will open PvZ to a whole new world.”

“We like to think we’re creating a brand new twist on the classic Plants vs. Zomvies that is the most social, shareable and expansive Plants vs. Zombies experience ever.”
