Philips Hue won’t block third-party light bulbs after all
Philips has gone back on its decision to prevent bulbs from third-party manufacturers working alongside its Philips Hue smart home platform.
Just yesterday, the company had rolled out a software update for the Philips Hue bridge that blocked bulbs from other makers.
Following a backlash from customers, the firm says it will reverse the change in a forthcoming update.

In a post on the Hue Developer Program forum, the company said the original change had been made in good faith, due to interoperability issues.
However, the firm said it underestimated the impact on customers using third-party bulbs.
“We recently upgraded the software for Philips Hue to ensure the best seamless connected lighting experience for our customers. This change was made in good faith,” the company wrote (via TechCrunch).
“However, we under estimated the impact this would have on a small number of customers who use lights from other brands which could not be controlled by the Philips Hue software.

Manufacturers making connected bulbs are now able to check whether bulbs will work with the Philips Hue bridge.
The ‘Friends of Hue’ programme for developers will also provide retail stickers that will assure customers bulbs will work with their system.
