Peter Molyneux opens Kickstarter for GODUS game

Peter Molyneux has opened a Kickstarter for Project GODUS, the next game from his development studio 22cans – and what he calls “a delightful reinvention of the god game”.

With Populous, released over 22 years ago, Molyneux arguably invented the god game genre, and at Bullfrog and then Lionhead he oversaw the development of some of the best-known and loved titles within that genre, including Dungeon Keeper and Black & White. Guildford-based 22cans recently released phone game Curiosity – what’s inside the cube (which has already achieved two million downloads), and GODUS (or whatever it ends up being called) will be the studio’s second title.

According to the Kickstarter blurb, GODUS will blend the scope of Populous with the detailed construction and multiplayer aspects of Black & White, using the most modern technology available. The world will be a living one, unique to each player and altered depending on how evil or good he or she is. Players will build a cult as their god flourishes, and will then be able to go to war with other players’ cults in multiplayer battles.

The game will be developed for PC and mobile platforms, but 22cans says it is hopeful that other systems can be catered for in the future. The company is seeking £450,000 in Kickstarter funding, and at the time of writing there are 28 days left for it to achieve its goal. If funded, the game should take seven to nine months to complete.
