Pepsi Phone P1 officially announced – but why?

Remember the Pepsi Phone? It wasn’t a bad dream – the soft drinks giant really has developed an Android handset.

Pepsi has officially revealed the Pepsi Phone P1, an affordable metal handset that marks the company’s first foray into the smartphone space.

The device, which is built by Shenzhen Scooby Communication Equipment, features a 5.5-inch screen and a premium metal build.

What’s more, it’s an affordable piece of kit that prices at around $110.

Unfortunately, the handset will only be retailing in China for now, available for pre-order through jd.com.

The real question still remains – why has Pepsi opted to peddle smartphones in China? The market is notoriously difficult to crack, thanks to the heavy competition from a host of mid-to-low range mobile firms in the region.

Still, Pepsi is a hugely popular global brand, and the recognisable logo stamped on the back of the Pepsi Phone P1 could work wonders with eastern buyers.
